Luo Wei / XinhuaMadonna to launch skincare range?Best foot forwardOnce mocked as the girl who plays with stinky feet, Lu Qin has upgraded the Chinese pedicure industry into part of the intangible heritage of Yangzhous Three Knives. China Daily reports.Just like Chinese acupuncture and traditional massage, pedicure has a long history in China, originating back in 3,000 BC.These are not pedicures purely to beautify the toe nails. Using special knives, pedicurists help cure peoples foot ailments, which are hard to get treatment for in hospitals. However, being a pedicurist was not a desirable job in the past, at least not for Lu Qin when she first learned her trade as a female pedicurist back in the 1980s.”There were only male pedicurists then,” 42-year-old Lu recalls. “Women had to wait along the corridors outside the mens bathhouse if they wanted their foot afflictions to be treated.”Now a famous pedicurist countrywide, Lus hands have served the feet of many political figures, business tycoons and entertainment celebrities, such as the late media mogul and philanthropist Run Run Shaw, popular star Andy Lau and former Hong Kong chief executive Donald Tsang.Lu grew up in a military family and spent her childhood in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region. In 1988, at the age of 17, she moved to Yangzhou, Jiangsu province.Pedicure is so popular in Yangzhou that there is even a phrase “Yangzhous Three Knives” referring to the kitchen knife which makes the Huaiyang cuisine, the haircutting knife which was once praised by Emperor Qian Long in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), and the pedicure knife which helps relieve sores on feet.”Yangzhou is my fathers hometown, and he spoke a lot about Yangzhous Three Knives when we were in Xinjiang,” says Lu. “I was curious about the pedicure knife because there are kitchen knives and haircutting knives in Xinjiang, but I had no idea about the pedicure knife.”For more China Face stories, click herePrevious Page1 2 3 Next PagePrevious Page1 2 3 Next Page8.03KRelated ArticlesColors of natureThe long way homeBright prospectsTracking her homecomingQuest for speed drives top quantum scientistTagspedicure cosmetics skin care fashion China FacePhotoJing Boran poses for Mens uno magazineQingming holiday embraces tourist boomJackie Chan holds charity concert marking 60th birthdayRoyal couple start New Zealand tourEntertainment Weekly Photos: March 29 – April 4Tong Liya poses in blooming lavender flowersArtFilmCelebrityFashionFoodTravelStunning visions of lightTop 10 Chinese artists on Hurun Art List 2014Zhang painting takes top price at Sothebys auctionSino-German artists hold joint exhibitionArt creations from autistic childrenAdnans art shows power of landscapeMilan puts design in the spotlightPhotographer captures Beijings city gatesChinese artists early work on displayHong Kong art fair coming to BeijingChristies opens Beijing art space to expand businessArtist gives new life to radishesPosters of 33rd HK Film Awards unveiledThe Other Woman screens in LondonConverted 3D movie for Chinese market comes under questionAmy Adams to appear in Story Of Your LifePyramid scheme bolsters ticket salesNeed for Speed remains top of Chinas box officeIn memory of movie star Leslie CheungFilm heroes descend on BeijingJohnny Depp arrives in Beijing to promote film TranscendenceHarry Potter spinoff set for movie trilogyTom Cruise: Top Gun 2 would be funInternet erupts over Wen-Yao affairJackie Chan holds charity concert marking 60th birthdayTong Liya poses in blooming lavender flowersJing Boran poses for Mens uno magazineKevin Federline welcomes sixth childDavid Beckham to launch sportswear rangeRoyal couple start New Zealand tourEntertainment Weekly Photos: March 29 – April 4Charlie Sheen hasnt paid child support for 3 months?Halle Berry: All women multitaskAmy Adams to appear in Story Of Your LifeStar Tracks in AprilGao Yuanyuan poses for fashion magazineColccis Summer 2015 collection at Sao Paulo Fashion WeekMarion Cotillard poses for new Lady Dior adsDavid Beckham to launch sportswear rangeMogujie aims for fashionable toneDolce and Gabbana not convinced by Beckham designsAlexa Chung to host FITs Future of Fashion showFashion food hatsChina Fashion Week ends in BeijingBackstage at China Fashion Week9th China Super Model Final ContestStumbling models at China Fashion WeekPeng Liyuan visits Europe in styleFashion food hatsLegend Holdings invests in green tea companyDemand for early batch of spring green tea dropsGerman winemaking flourishes in the EastQueen of tea losing crown amid frugality driveAlcohol industry faces challenges amid anti-graft campaignVATS to promote well-known Napa Valley winesIllegal GM food raises concernsChina intercepts 143 food shipments in FebruaryChina looks to better supervise food, drug safetyVice Premier urges rural reform, food safetyItalian wine producers join hands to hit Chinese marketTop 10 most beautiful terraces in ChinaMountain paradiseGlimpses of Lhasas holiday seasonTop 10 destinations for female travelersTop 10 seldom-seen views around the worldQuanzhou charmsYunnan, a travel heavenCity of SpringsMorning sun showers snow-covered Great WallMixing old with new in central Vietnam2013 Top 10 Tourism DestinationsEditors PicksInternet erupts over Wen-Yao affairFamous couples who have parted waysStumbling models at China Fashion WeekRape flower terraces beckon romantic spiritHot wordsNanluoguxiangOscars red carpetShirley TempleKorean dramaReganmianLeonardo DiCaprioZhang YimouNing HaoTeaPaul WalkerVideoEasy Talk: JaywalkingEasy Talk: Traveling dos and dontsTaking flightColumnsRaymond Zhou:X-RayPauline D Loh:
