Updated:2015-04-07 10:23:32Comments Print Mail Large Medium SmallThe protein concentrate apoptotic secretome (APOSEC) extracted from white blood cells is capable of reducing damage that occurs as a result of spinal cord injuries, the Medical University of Vienna said in a press release Wednesday.
Tests conducted on animals showed that if an injection of the APOSEC agent was administered in the abdominal cavity 40 minutes after the spinal injury occurred, “severe consequential paralyses” could be avoided, according to the results from a new study from the university.
In addition, the protein concentrate was also shown to boost regeneration through vascularization.
“It seems that APOSEC influences the severity of paralyses decisively,” said Hendrik Jan Ankersmit from the Universitys Department of Thoracic Surgery.
The APOSEC protein concentrate is a soluble solution that is extracted from white blood cells under irradiation, a process said to be straight-forward and relatively inexpensive. It can also be freeze-dried for later use if necessary, researchers stated.
Researchers used humane virus-inactivated APOSEC in its testing, which has also been approved for use on humans by the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety.
The research group demonstrated that the injection of APOSEC showed positive results during an experimental acute stroke, with the effects of stroke damage in animals reduced by 30 percent.
The full results of the study have been published in the journal Experimental Neurology.8.03KRelated ArticlesM-health carves out path to new directionGM food creators play up health, convenienceHealth Express bringing brighter life to people with cataractsSamsungs strategy officer eyes health sector for growthChina, Africa to strength health cooperationTagshealth proteinPhoto7 ways to beat spring sleepinessBeautiful Xinyi flower, Chinese natural herbPhotos capture water birds romanceEntertainment weekly photos: April 4 – 10Hands across the waterRising year for dragon robe designerArtFilmCelebrityFashionFoodTravelFormer PLA pilot creates Silk Road statues for ItalyArt lovers propel auction leaders growthOil paper umbrellas made in SichuanExhibit featuring Qi Baishis art opens in Los AngelesCeramic artists gather for dialoguePainting for massesExhibition showcases painter Lin Fengmians art lifeAbandoned factory storage transformed into art center in ShanghaiInheritor of woodblock painting technique sends gift to Baima TempleChinese folk art expo to tour USModern ceramic exhibition on display at National Art MuseumTycoon art collector Lius treasure troveCrossing the pond, landing with a thudChinese Bride Wars set for Qixi releaseFans call on Disney to not whitewash MulanTV dramas must stop distorting factsCast members promote Running Man II in GuangzhouHighlights of China Film Directors Guild AwardsWoodley, Fault In Our Stars, win big at MTV Movie AwardsChinese films draw attention at Houston film festivalParis Holiday to hit theaters this summerFilm luminaries attracted to Internet PlusThree-minute cameos of China go down well in UKDarkdraft sheds light on joint ventures bright prospectsNi Ni graces fashion magazineIn memory of movie star Leslie CheungFilmmaker Lu Chuan marries CCTV anchorStreet snaps of actress Ma SuEntertainment weekly photos: April 4 – 10Asias most gorgeous facesEntertainment weekly photos: March 28 – April 3Star Tracks in AprilActress Xu Lu practices balletGong Li visits Loreal research center in ShanghaiAsias most gorgeous facesActor Lee Byung-hun welcomes baby boyRising year for dragon robe designerMiss China isnt just a pretty face, former beauty queen saysVivian Chow shines Shanghai Fashion WeekModels present Guo Peis creations at Shanghai fashion weekShanghai Fashion Week F/W 2015Runway Brides2015 Miss Kyrgyz beauty pageant concludedSino style at China Fashion WeekModels present creations by Italian designer at China Fashion WeekHighlights from China Fashion WeekSong Jia at Louis Vuitton eventCreations presented at China Fashion WeekTender leaves seen at tea garden in Chinas HubeiOrigins of British-style afternoon tea in ShanghaiAfternoon delightSnails star at French cuisine festival in BeijingA love affair with wineSo, did hamburgers originate in China?Qiang ethnic people pick spring tea leavesBallad sheds light on historical tea tradeTaste of Sichuan, beyond peppercornsUN highlights food safety on World Health DayVigilantes for safe foodSwiss students visit tea garden in HangzhouTop 10 most beautiful terraces in ChinaMountain paradiseGlimpses of Lhasas holiday seasonTop 10 destinations for female travelersTop 10 seldom-seen views around the worldQuanzhou charmsYunnan, a travel heavenCity of SpringsMorning sun showers snow-covered Great WallMixing old with new in central Vietnam2013 Top 10 Tourism DestinationsEditors Picks7 ways to beat spring sleepinessShould schools start teaching traditional characters again?Chinese actresses at the Oscars: With a purpose or just for fun?Memorable moments from Spring Festival breakHot wordsRobin WilliamsHan HanGossipTiny TimesOscars red carpet ReganmianNanluoguxiangTeaShirley TempleLeonardo DiCaprioVideoHuang Yue and his vibrant paintingsEasy Talk: My fitness planEasy Talk: Budget husbandColumnsRaymond Zhou:X-RayPauline D Loh:
