Updated:2014-12-08 10:50:13Comments Print Mail Large Medium SmallThe first volume of an encyclopedia detailing the Nanjing Massacre was released on Sunday in Nanjing, capital of east Chinas Jiangsu Province.
The encyclopedia, composed of four volumes of over 8,000 entries, exposes the crimes of Japanese troops in Nanjing in over 40 days from late 1937 to early 1938.
Historians from some 10 countries, including China, Japan, the United States, Russia and Germany have contributed to the compendium.
Zhu Chengshan, curator of the Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall, believes that as the first national memorial day on Dec. 13 draws near, publication of the book will promote historical truth and refute some right-wing Japanese slander.
Qi Houjie, one of the compilers and a former researcher with the Second Historical Archives of China, describes the work as mainly about the invaders slaughter and sexual violence.
The Japanese right-wings attempts to deny history has forced researchers to pay more attention to international cooperation and exchange, he said.
Japanese troops occupied Nanjing on Dec. 13, 1937, and began a six-week massacre. More than 300,000 Chinese people — both soldiers who had laid down their arms and civilians – were killed and more than 20,000 cases of rape occurred.
The first volume deals mainly with the eve of the massacre. The other three volumes will be published by the end of next year, according to Zhu Tongfang, chairman of the Nanjing Publishing Group.8.03KRelated ArticlesTradition by the bookBrigitte Lin turns 60, publishes her 2nd bookChinese book fair attracts scores of Cambodian studentsHighlights of China section of Belgrade Book FairBook Bucket Challenge on the rise in ChinaTagsmassacre encyclopedia NanjingPhotoArt Basel in Miami BeachStars shine at China International Film Festival LondonCulture Insider: 6 things you may not know about Major SnowBuying, restoring old house become hobby of richColored pottery camel unearthed from Tang Dynasty tombSister Wudang blends martial arts and musicArtFilmCelebrityFashionFoodTravelDunhuang culture on display in Hong KongDalis sculptures settle in National Art Museum of ChinaArt Basel in Miami BeachHome is the heart of UCCA showSister Wudang blends martial arts and musicLast artistic flourish in neighborhood to be demolishedPolitical arts draw visitors from around the worldOil paintings of flowers and birds exhibited in New YorkEmperor Qianlongs hand scroll auctioned at record highArt marks Sino-Bulgarian tiesHigh price arts from high-profile collectorMona Lisa, a portrait of Da Vincis Chinese mother?Three Chinese films nominated for Golden GlobesThe Crossing premieres in TaipeiStars shine at China International Film Festival LondonWhere it all beganVengeance drives new wartime TV seriesRevolutionary legal drama hits Chinese theatersSouth Korean movie set for China market testShow me the money!Golden year for Chinese cinemaBrit film fest brings dozens of movies to Chinese fansInterstellar rules Chinas box officeChina to send artists to live in grassroots communitiesTIME picks top 10 selfies of the yearPregnant Duchess visits New YorkStars shine at China International Film Festival LondonLiu Yan poses for fashion magazineStars shine at Singapore Intl Film FestivalJiang Wen poses for Bazaar Mens StyleStar Tracks in DecemberEntertainment weekly photos: Nov 29 – Dec 5Zhou Xun releases new song for ChristmasWilliam So ties knot with long-time girlfriendDavid Beckham, eldest son involved in car crashFan Bingbing as Empress of ChinaBehind the scenes of Victorias Secret 20142014 Victorias Secret Fashion ShowFlower song of minimalism and simplicityFashion updateSpanish jeweler seeks golden opportunity in ChinaSecrets out with a splashFurnishing culture:Chinese designer inspired by hometownVictorias Secret shop opens in LondonChina and France plan couture collaborationsDiesel-powered babiesDesigners cash in on celebrity babiesNew Miss Model crowned in ShenzhenThe 20th Paris Chocolate ShowRaw energy with burnt butterChina confident of food security strategySmuggled beef scandal reveals supervision loopholePen allows you to draw with spicesCalypso sweetheartThe good oilRestaurant in a caveDelicious hat fashionYummy Box pizzas reflect cross-country survey in USHungry for Korean food?Home flavors of the Lion CityTop 10 most beautiful terraces in ChinaMountain paradiseGlimpses of Lhasas holiday seasonTop 10 destinations for female travelersTop 10 seldom-seen views around the worldQuanzhou charmsYunnan, a travel heavenCity of SpringsMorning sun showers snow-covered Great WallMixing old with new in central Vietnam2013 Top 10 Tourism Destinations Editors PicksEmperor Qianlongs hand scroll auctioned at record highCulture Insider: What did people eat in ancient China?Hot wordsEasy TalkStart of AutumnChinese Valentines DayGaokaoCulture InsiderTop 10sTeaForbidden CityDragon Boat FestivalChinese at CannesVideoEasy Talk:Is TCM still relevant?Easy Talk: Chitchat about ThanksgivingThe spirit of traditional Beijing cuisineColumnsRaymond Zhou:X-Ray
